A MEETING called to discuss the future of Third Beach has revealed what the government hopes to have in the area.
The plan for Third Beach, which if it finally survives a court challenge by non-governmental organizations (NGOs), publicly showed how wasteland either side of Altinkent Sitesi could be used.
The designs envisage restaurants, local amenities, boutique hotels, shops and other features crammed into the cove areas.
Campaigners say there is too much urbanization planned and there are fears that, ultimately, the beach will pay the heaviest price, with access limited and one step removed from eventual privatization.
The meeting, held at Didim Belediye, saw the likes of members from local government and politics attend. These included Didim Mayor Deniz Atabay, Deputy Mayor Ercan Atasoy, CHP and MHP council members, as well as representatives from education, women’s groups and other NGOs.
In a speech, Mr Atabay said: “This area is owned by the Treasury and the plans were drawn up in 2010. What we now have to do is to decide locally on what the public requires.”
Democracy Platform Architect Ali Budak said the density of the amenities did not conform to zoning laws and the public’s view had not been sought. He called for the plans to be cancelled and a proper zoning plan submitted by the council to the Ministry for agreement.
The council will now call for the subject to be raised in parliament, call for the project to be cancelled and any court decisions to be stayed.
