WHILE many tourists continue to comment adversely on the centralised part of Altinkum, which has been fenced off for what seems decades, another well-known location point is beginning to gather dust.
Didim’s Customs House was opened in a fanfare in 2006 and operated for five years with regular seasonal crossing between Didim and the Greek islands, as operated by Yesil Marmaris.
At its height, around 12,000 extra tourists annually came via the customs point from Greece.
Despite many false dawns and hopes that a ferry operation would be operating on a regular basis, it appears that is still some distance off and the Custom’s House, at the far end of the Main Beach, is now standing empty as a ‘White Elephant’ monument.
Local journalists have been asking what next for the Didim’s Customs House.
What has swung things around is the fact that Didim Marina can quite equally offer the custom’s point.
Local retailers have suggested action needs to be taken to bring it back into life, or simply do away with it as it is not contributing to the economy in any way.
If anything it is simply an advert for everything that’s negative and a failure about Altinkum – another abandoned building, another bad idea that failed to last the course.
Isn’t it time for the authorities that have responsibility for the Custom’s House to make a decision and finally act?
