Fuel price hike, fears of new public transport raise

Update

The rise this week in petrol due to an increase in Government tax has sparked fears that it could set a new round of price hikes in taxi and bus fares.

The Special Consumption Tax (SCT), which was 2.52 TL per litre of gasoline, was increased to 7.52 TL. The tax on diesel rose from 2.05 TL to 7.05 TL. The tax amount per litre from LPG autogas was determined as 5.77 TL.

The regulations made in the amounts of Special Consumption Tax (SCT) on fuel were published in the Official Gazette. According to the decision, taxes will continue to be exempted from aviation gasoline, jet fuel and light oils.

On the other hand, with the signature of President Erdoğan, an additional budget was submitted to the National Assembly (TBMM). The additional budget of 1 trillion 119 billion 514 million 513 thousand liras was approved by the votes of the AKP and MHP deputies in the TBMM.

While it was decided to transfer an additional budget of 640 million 236 thousand liras to the Presidency in the additional budget, it was noted that President Erdoğan’s salary was increased by 39 per cent.

The largest appropriation was allocated to the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD). The Presidency of Religious Affairs will also receive an additional budget of 276 million 218 thousand liras.

Fears for hike in transportation prices

Making evaluations after the litre price of gasoline and diesel increased above 30 liras at the pump, Aydın Chamber of Drivers Chairman Semih Özmeriç said the driver tradesmen could not make a profit with the current price tariff.

Özmeriç stated that for the sustainability of the transportation sector, it should either be subsidized or the price tariff should be readjusted.

The fact that the litre price of diesel and gasoline exceeded 30 liras, led to Özmeri to suggest the increase will directly affect the transportation sector and indirectly affect other sectors.

Reminding that it was decided to collect the Motor Vehicles Tax for the second time before, Özmeriç stated that he predicted that the increase in fuel prices after the development of MTV would leave the transportation sector in a very difficult situation.

Özmeriç said: “In order for us to make the transportation business sustainable, let alone make a profit, our incomes and expenses must at least match up. For this, of course, after re-calculating our book, it is inevitable that we will request a price adjustment. Either they will subsidize us from somewhere, or they will give us our price list. We will adjust ourselves accordingly.”

He said the driver tradesmen always consider the situation of the people and demand price tariffs in a reasonable way.

Chairman of the Didim Chamber of Drivers and Automakers, Savaş Cengiz, said: “We will express that the SCT increase should not be applied to our transport tradesmen and that SCT reduction should be made for commercial vehicles in fuel oil.

“We will request a 50 percent raise by petitioning the Aydın Metropolitan Municipality Transportation Coordination Center. We expect the Mayor of Aydın Metropolitan Municipality, Özlem Çerçioğlu , to bring the tariffs to conditions that can relax us.

“Updating the tariffs is a must, because otherwise our tradesmen cannot continue this business. We expect our request to be discussed and decided upon at the UKOME Board in July.”
