To my dear friend Glenn…

Update

Hasan Bayrak, Voices Publisher

Glenn Maffia, one of the first editors of our newspaper, died last January 10th at the age of 66.

I met Glenn in 2005, when I was a young 26-year-old journalist with plans to launch Voices, but I didn’t know how.

And I met Glenn and Gill and together we published the first issue of Voices.

In our first issue, we reported on the challenges faced by students studying in Didim. Our headline was Glenn’s. “Overcoming the Boundaries of Language”

In the article, we used a photograph I took in the classroom of Dale Harris, who was 10 years old at the time. Dale and other British children were being taught in a language they did not know.

Later they all learned Turkish and graduated from their schools. I hope they are all happy and successful in their lives.

Glenn and I had many good memories during our 19 years of friendship.

I remember Glenn’s sharp sense of humor, his love of people, his love of the Temple of Apollo and the history of this region.

You were a very good man, Glenn.

I am grateful for what you did.

Without you and Gill there would be no Voices.

Rest in peace.
