Reaction to the latest regulations concerning street animals led to a protest on Thursday night in Didim.

Local organisations and the public gathered to voice their opposition to their regulations with a gathering opposite the Old Courthouse in Didim and then a march to the City Square.

The march occurred as the Voices Newspaper was going to print.

In a similar move, under the leadership of Kuşadası City Council, animal lovers and citizens gathered to make their feelings known.

CHP Kuşadası District Women’s Branch President Nilgün Yeşilçimen also spoke at the protest and said that if it were not for their party, the law that was passed would have been completely euthanasia.

Yeşilçimen said: “The 17-article ‘Law Proposal on Amendments to the Animal Protection Law’, which includes regulations regarding stray animals and has caused reactions in the public, was unfortunately accepted by the votes of the AKP and MHP in the General Assembly of the Turkish Grand National Assembly in the early hours of the morning of July 30, despite the objections of our party, other opposition parties and the vast majority of our people.”

After the speeches, there was a 15-minute sit-down protest.
