Explorations in the Eğridere area of Aydın’s Söke district have unearthed prehistoric rock paintings dating back 8,000 years and tomb and chapel ruins from the Byzantine period.
These findings show that the region has a long history and that different civilizations have lived in this region from ancient times to the Byzantine period.
Following the archaeological findings in the region, the Aydın Cultural Heritage Protection Regional Board declared the area a 1st Degree Archaeological Site.
In line with this decision, various measures will be taken to protect the area and zoning activities will be limited in the settlement.
Agricultural activities will be limited, and infrastructure work can only be carried out with the approval of the museum directorate and the head of the excavation. In addition, the removal of materials such as stone and soil from the area or the dumping of industrial waste in the area was completely prohibited.
This discovery once again reveals how Mount Latmos was used as a settlement area throughout history. Rock paintings dating back 8,000 years reveal the deep history of human settlements in this region. The tomb and chapel ruins from the Byzantine period also show that the region was important in terms of Christian history. Future Plans
This decision is an important step not only for Aydın but also for the protection of Turkey’s historical and cultural heritage.
