Migrants stopped in Didim

Coast Guard and Gendarmerie units have been busy in the last few days, detaining more than 120 migrants in, around and off the coast of Didim.

Migrants who were trying to cross the Aegean by illegal means were noticed by Coast Guard Command teams at Sedef Bay. The boat was stopped and was found to contain 18 migrants, five from Syria, seven Palestinians and six Egyptians.

A rubber boat which suffered engine failure and drifting in Didim waters was also stopped by a Coast Guard team. A total of 13 migrants, including five children, were rescued.

Patrol activities carried out by Didim and Söke District Gendarmerie Commands resulted in the detention of 70 migrants, 34 hidden in scrubland at Balat and 36 at Doganbey.

And 28 migrants, including two children, on a sailing boat detected off the coast of Didim enroute to Italy were caught, and two migrant smugglers detained.

All migrants were handed to Didim District Police Department teams for processing and sent to Aydın Repatriation Centre.
