New coastline beach path created

A NEW coastline is taking shape below Didim’s Luna Park, it has emerged.

Didim Mayor Deniz Atabay said work had begun on developing a new coastline path that would lead from beach, formerly as Kamaci Beach or Second Beach, next to the Luna Park, through to the Aytepe Beach which stands below the Peace Flame.

Mr Atabay said that it was one of the first steps in helping to open up the coast to the public.

However, in recent days, signs have gone up on the path at the bottom of the Luna Park, urging people not to enter the site. It is thought that more work is required to make the path completely safe.

Itinerant sellers banned from Saturday Market streets

THE streets around Didim Market are a lot quieter and better to walk on after a crackdown banished itinerant sellers.

The operation, promised by Didim Mayor Deniz Atabay, has also been backed by advertising hoardings declaring the council’s war on reclaiming the streets for its residents.

One of the starkest sights of this was the streets around Didim’s Saturday Market which were deserted of sellers of Fruit, clothes and other goods.

Mr Atabay commented that with the opening of the tourism season, there would also be a concerted effort on clearing pathways of goods in Yenihisar and Altinkum.

He said those that resisted the laws, would face criminal action.

Apollo Temple road changes

Meanwhile, in Eskiköy, the area around the Apollo Temple, efforts were beginning to uproot a road at the southern end of the village which had apparently been lain illegally.

Dated April 2, 2014, the Protection Board and Miletus Museum wrote to Didim Council ordering the paved road to be dismantled.

The council began to carry out the order this week.

Didim Cultural Heritage Protection Association chairman Mustafa Senturk had raised the issue of ongoing road works in November last year.

Orman Kamp to be run by council

A BEAUTIFUL wooded picnic area, located over 147 acres in Didim, will be run by Didim council for the next five years.

The council was one of six contractors bidding for the tender to run Orhan Camp, owned by the Ministry of Water Affairs and Forestry. It is located just after Club Tarhan, at Mavisehir.

The tender was decided on Monday May 26, with the council being accepted to run the forestry camp for the next five years, having had its bid of 378,000TL, the highest bidder, successfully accepted.

Mobile base station plan defeated

RESIDENTS have won a fight to prevent a GSM base station to be located on privately owned land off Adnan Menderes Boulevard.

They had reacted furiously to the news that there were plans to build the unit close to their homes near to Didim Stadium, in Sokak 1514, Efeler Mah.

Lawyers acting on behalf of a private GSM company said they had obtained the necessary permits, but residents raised fears over the health risk claims that have apparently been attached to such units.

A meeting was held with the lawyers, residents and Deputy Mayor Ercan Atasoy, and a decision was made not to locate the base station there in view of residents’ concerns.

Mayor actions accounted for

MAYOR Deniz Atabay has given a broad indication of the measures and actions that are being achieved since he took office on April 30.

In a two-hour press conference, he said that council employees had worked to get a number of issues completed or at least underway.

These included parking and landscaping in a number of areas; repair and refurbishment of Altinkum beach; various repairs and improvements to Atatürk Boulevard; road traffic management on the Akbuk road; road improvements around the Buyuk Anadolu Hotel; beach sand transport; preparation and improvements to various minor roads across the neighbourhoods and better pavements for Mavisehir.

Other highlights have also seen improvements to the council bus garage; iron railings in Eskiköy; rainwater grids in Altinkum; water and sewage infrastructure improvements, cleaning of all beaches and associated areas; seasonal planting, approximately 60,000 metric tons of parks and green spaces weeded and a team of 20 people dedicated to cleaning areas in Akbuk.
