A CAMPAIGN to convert blue plastic bottle tops into money has helped to buy ten wheelchairs for the disabled community in Didim.

The Didim Alevi Bektashi Culture Centre and Cemevinin cap collection campaign conducted by the Association raised enough cash for the wheelchairs to be handed over to the Didim Disabled Association.

The handover took place at the Centre for the Disabled, with Mayor Deniz Atabay and his wife present, along with other community figures.

The campaign has been occurring annually for the last four years and has captured the imagination of the public, enabling many disabled people in the town and outer villages to have greater mobility.

A Culture Centre spokesman said: “This campaign helps in so many ways, from giving greater accessibility to the disabled by raising money for their wheelchairs, as well as helping to recycle and eliminate the plastic menace in this town.

“We would like to thank everyone who contributed to the scheme and their support in helping the disabled.”

Disabled association chairman Bedri Altintas thanked the community and the wider Didim public for continuing to support the disabled community in such a pro-active way.

He said: “Many members of our association are eternally grateful for the help they have received. Their lives have been transformed.”

Mr Atabay said: “This campaign helps to kill two birds with one stone: taking plastic off the streets and recycling it, and raising money to give greater access for the disabled community.”
