Building work ban lifted

SEPTEMBER 15 represented the start of the new construction season just as tourists were going home.

The traditional ban runs from May 15 to September 15, so unfinished building sites will begin again to see signs of life.

Art Group readies for season

MEMBERS, old and new, of the Altinkum Art Group are being urged to get ready for a new season of meet-ups.

Group founder Pat Flint said the first meeting will be held on Thursday October 16 at Moby Dicks 3 in 1 Restaurant from 1pm. Everyone’s welcome to attend

Nightclub boss dies of heart attack

THE owner of Didim’s most popular nightclub has died suddenly.

Cafer Kaya (55), owner of Medusa Nightclub, died on Saturday September 13 after being taken ill. He is understood to have suffered a heart attack.

Local media reported that Mr Kaya was taken to Didim State and then transferred to Aydin’s Ataturk Hospital, but despite medical intervention, could not be saved.

Students offer help with gardens

STUDENTS from six countries joined in a garden project in Didim recently.

The 20 students from the Czech Republic, Japan, Serbia, South Korea, Germany and Poland pad a flying visit to the town as part of the International Voluntary Work network.

They visited the town to find out more about its history and then volunteered to give helping hands to a number of parks and gardens in district under the watchful eye of Belediye officers.

The project is part of an ongoing exchange with the province’s youth services organization. One of the projects they became engaged in was planting shrubs and trees on land just off Ege Cad.

Pedestrian dies in Mavisehir crash

AN 80-year-old man died when he was struck by a car close to the Mavisehir Market on the Didim-Soke road.

The pedestrian, named locally as Necmettin Durmaz, a retired non-commissioned officer, was struck by a car driven by Özkan Keskin (35) at about 10.30pm last Friday night (Sept 12).

It is understood that Mr Durmaz died at the scene. Police detained the driver and an investigation has been launched into the accident.

Illegal immigrants caught in Didim

THE rising tide of immigrants looking to sail to Europe continues apace.

Coast Guard authorities detained 82 illegal immigrants in and around the Didim region in two separate incidents.

In one swoop, 45 illegal immigrants hailing from Syria, Eritrea, Nigeria, Gambia and Uganda were caught, while 37 immigrants, mainly Syrian women and children, were caught at Tekağaç.

All were transferred to Aydin Security Directorate Foreigners’ Department to be dealt with.
