ANGRY residents in Mavisehir came together to launch a high profile protest against fatalities on their local roads following the death of a pedestrian last week.
Necmettin Durmaz, (80), a retired non-commissioned officer, died when he was struck by a car on Friday (Sept 12), close to the Mavisehir Market on the Didim-Soke road. A police investigation is underway into the cause of the accident.
However, concerned and fed-up residents in the village decided to vent their feelings with a protest at the number of accidents seen in the district.
They called on the local authorities, with particular responsibility for the Didim-Soke Highway, to draw up a number of solutions to slow down traffic and help reduce fatalities and injuries.
The protests brought together both residents and shopkeepers. The main road was briefly closed for ten minutes by the protestors, but with Didim police present, it was re-opened with little problem.
One resident said: “We want the authorities, both Aydin and Didim, to take responsibility, find solutions and reduce the accident toll here.
“How many more lives will be lost before action is taken?”
The protestors said promises had been made in recent years for extra signaling, overpasses, intersections and pavements, but none had yet materialized.
