Volunteer lays out street animal centre ‘shortfalls’

IF a petition against the street dogs in Didim was not enough, it seems the volunteers who help at Didim’s animal shelter are also up in arms for different reasons.

Gill Erer, a veteran campaign for the street animal sector in Didim, in an email to Voices, leveled a number of allegations over the running and management of the shelter.

Among the volunteers’ concerns she raised were centred on veterinary care aspects, a lack of medicines and antibiotics, and a lack of operations in relation to the neuter and release programme.

She alleged there were now 60 dogs at the centre which only had only 28 kennels, while there were 30 pups in the puppy pens.

She went on to outline a number of other issues centred on the shelter and the “Brit volunteers (had) expressed their outrage”.

In another development that emerged on Facebook, Val Whyte, a veteran campaign for abandoned and street animals, appealed directly to people who may have a street bitch that is unspayed to contact her direct on 0536 721 8911.

She said that due to the shelter’s present situation, a group of volunteers will pay for the spay operation via a private vet. In the post, she said: “This is for the benefit of all Didim residents and holidaymakers…….We are taking matters into our own hands.”
