DIDIM residents turned out in their droves on Monday in support of deputy Mayor Ercan Atasoy after he was attacked by two people.

The deputy mayor, who has been in politics since 1979, made his first public appearance on the steps of Didim Belediye days after he was assaulted outside his home.

Mr Atasoy, who was attacked last week, briefly attended hospital but was fit enough to be discharged.

A police investigation has begun to catch the culprits and to discover whether there is any link between the ongoing works on Altinkum seafront – which has been sparked by the council – and the attack.

On Monday afternoon, Mr Atasoy along with other politicians decried the assault and said that “enough is enough” – a stiffening of language and potential action against those who continual flout their law in the eyes of the council.

Mr Atasoy told the crowd: “Such attacks cannot intimidate us. We are here until we die behind everything that we know is true. Our services are doing well and we’re getting bad reactions. We will continue our service.”

Other local parties have also come out in support of Mr Atasoy and condemned last Monday’s attack.
