SEVERAL weeks after Voices columnist Glenn Maffia raised the possibility of water leaking on to the Temple of Apollon site, concern has now been raised by locals about the issue.

Locals say the Temple of Apollo has been exposed to an unidentified water stream.

Continuing for about 6 months, the water flow has increased with the arrival of winter, prompting concerns.

The water streams have increasingly accumulated in the pit area inside the temple, causing officials to urge authorities to investigate.

Hisar Mahallesi Mukhtar Bahri Aşıksaid German archaeologists who visited in the summer were aware of the issue.

Aydın Metropolitan Municipality Water and Sewerage Works (ASKİ) conducted studies to determine where water came from; but could not find its source.

Aşık revealed that the Monuments Board, which oversees the upkeep of the Temple, had not allowed ASKİ to conduct deeper excavations around the temple.

He speculated that one of the old water pipes passing through these neighborhoods had erupted, flowing water and was now causing “a very bad smell.”
