Sharp eyed walker catches Ibis view
A FLOCK of Glossy Ibiz have been caught on camera by Voices readers as they strolled over Manastir Bay.
The Glossy Ibis were caught out on the small lagoons at Manastir towards the new hotel build by couple Peter and Jacqueline Benge.
Mr Benge alerted Voices to the Ibis after reading about the work of the students from Esra Karakaya High School and its twin school in Romania who are taking part in the “Let’s Watch the Birds” project which is being EU funded to the tune of 23,000 euros.
Glossy Ibis is the most widespread ibis species, breeding in scattered sites in warm regions of Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Atlantic and Caribbean[2] regions of theAmericas.
It is thought to have originated in the Old World and spread naturally from Africa to northern South America in the 19th century, from where it spread to North America.[3]
The species is migratory; most European birds winter in Africa. While generally declining in Europe, it has recently established a breeding colony in southern Spain.
