First wedding in Akbuk for 145 years
AKBUK’S renovated Greek Orthodox Church has welcomed its first wedding in 145 years recently.
The church, fell into disrepair but was refurbished in 2007, and has only recently come back into service.
And it was there that the Didim Syriac community witnessed the marriage of young couple Enlil Simon Afram (38) and Loris Acar (29).
Friends and relatives of the couple, with some coming from Sweden, were on hand to witness the religious wedding, which was overseen by Bishop Gabriel from the Orthodox Church.
Loris’ was taken by limousine to the historic church and was greeted on entry with drums and horns. She was accompanied by her father and bridesmaids.
Glee Club ticket collection points
TICKETS for Didim Glee Club’s Old Time Music Hall performances are now available at three collection points in the town.
The performances will take place on Thursday and Friday June 11-12 at the Ticeret Odasi Salonu, which is opposite the small Tesco Kipa on 19 Mayis Cad in Didim.

The collection points for tickets are The Wiganer; Cash’s Terrace Bar and Carol’s Wine Bar.
All proceeds from the nights will go to Help in Hands newest project: a new Cardiology Assessment Unit at Didim Hospital.
One-fifth of checked vehicles defective
MORE than 12,000 vehicles were found to be defective in traffic police checks in April, it has emerged.
Fines totaling 2.9 million TL were levied on drivers of 12,047 vehicles last month. A total of 66,422 vehicles were checked.
In a statement from the Aydin Governor’s Office, 1,225 faulty vehicles were banned from the roads of Aydin, while 64 drivers were reported to court for defective vehicles and 262 drivers’ licenses were confiscated.
In April in Aydin Province, there were 414 traffic accidents, 257 of them were injury-related. There people died and 390 people were injured.
Youngsters learn rules of the road
YOUNGSTERS have been given a lesson in understanding the laws of the road – thanks to the local Gendarmerie.
Didim District Gendarmerie Command launched “Road Traffic Week” within the activities of the gendarmerie traffic teams and gave training to elementary school students.
Highway Traffic Week activities included activities within primary schools; practical information on the meaning of traffic lights and signs and education in general.
They were also taught the importance of pedestrian and school crossings, cyclists rules, riding the school bus vehicle and general traffic advice. They were told about the dangers of the road, such as drunk driving, using a mobile phone while driving and speeding.
Students offered environment education
STUDENTS from Yalıköy Middle School were recently tasked with learning more about the importance of the environment. With Blue Flag beaches set to be confirmed, Didim Municipality decided to host lessons for the youngsters for the first time at a local nature park.
Nature Park Environmental Education Foundation of Turkey (TÜRÇEV) North Aegean Provincial Coordinator Dogan Karakas was the aim speaker.
Students learned more about climate change, the increase of chemical use and fossil fuels causing greenhouse gases and effects of shrinking habitats and melting glaciers. Mr Karakas suggested they engaged in recycling activities and cycle more in helping to protect the environment.
After this, the youngster cheerfully chanted ‘Climate Friendly Didim’ and opened banners and waved blue flags.
