A MEGA-ten hour 94-game extravaganza of darts last Sunday resulted in a ‘double top’ of new names for the men’s and inaugural women’s titles.
Hosted at U2 Leon’s Bar, on Adnan Menderes Bulvari, the 2014 Didim Darts Knockout Competition saw 16 men and 16 women battle for the top honours.
The women’s tournament concluded with Claire Nay closing out Julie Collings 3-0 in the final after an action-packed tussle.
Backed by a packed out bar, Claire, who moved here in 2010, held her nerve to take the crown, even though she admitted she had only actively taken up darts since the end of 2013.
Formerly from Rochdale, Claire (38) said: “I started playing darts, but only had about four games with a few friends for something to do. I had never played before that.
“I didn’t pick up my darts again until the start of this season when I was asked to play on a local team.
“I’m so happy to win the title. I expected to be out after the first round and was in complete shock when I did win.”
The other shock happened earlier in the day in the Men’s tournament when three-times men’s winner Chris Bate was beaten in the quarters. His victor Steve Watson was then knocked out in the semis by Chaz Howell.
Chaz (47), a semi-finalist last year, then took on 2014 finalist Tony Sapsford, and it was Chaz that eventually ran out a 3-0 victor.
Chaz throws for the Men’s title
Chaz, a co-organiser of the Didim Darts League and the Knockout Competition, said: “It was a great day and I was lucky to beat Tony who is a very good player. I am just grateful to have kept my game together as it was a long day.
“I’d like thank all the organizers, supporters and the venue for putting on a great day and one which is now a permanent fixture in the darters calendar.”
The shields were named after late local darts’ legend Mick Griffiths. On the day, a raffle raised 265TL towards the Help-in-Hands 18,000TL cardiology unit at Didim State Hospital.
