Update

DOMESTIC and international tourists have been heartened by news that security is being stepped up by Didim police and Zabita officers in the resort.

As the season gets into full swing, Didim police have announced the CCTV system is now fully up and running 24 hours a day, particularly across Altinkum beach.

In separate moves, the Council’s Zabita have been cracking down on itinerant beach sellers and beggars, while the traffic police are carrying out greater checks on drunk drivers and those flouting highway laws.

The aim is not to show a police state mentality, but to ensure peace and security across Altinkum, Didim, Mavisehir and Akbuk.

Local media reported the installation of 30 cameras in and around Yali Cadd was complete and will be monitored 24 hours a day during the summer.

In addition, there are 36 other separate cameras monitoring other parts of the resort to help minimize crime and to get to incidents quicker and more efficiently.

Beaches will also be getting a greater police presence with four biking officers on the beat.

Traffic police have also carried out more frequent police controls checks at important junctions and entrances and exits into Didim, particularly between 11.30pm and 1am.

They are also being aided by support from Aydin police teams. On one evening last week, 35 cars were inspected at a particular point, with eight of them being found to be in breach of highway rules. A total of 3,935 TL was applied to administrative fines.

On Altinkum beach, Zabita officers are working to stop salesman hassling people with goods and selling newspapers and food items.

Meanwhile, back on the streets officers have been countering a number of beggars. One beggar, with a baby, from Adana was detained for begging at street lights on 19 Mayis Caddesi. There have also been reports of beggars at Akbuk’s Friday market.
